A project to uncover and record headstones around the churchyard at St Michael and St Wulfad’s Church in Stone is getting under way, with volunteers invited to help at its next session this weekend.
Some years ago, a decision was taken to lay flat headstones around the perimeter of the churchyard. According to the church, no record was kept showing exactly where individual stones had been placed.
Work has now started to uncover them again, with the first five headstones already revealed.
The project will continue around the churchyard perimeter over the coming weeks, allowing the inscriptions to be recorded and helping to preserve information about people buried there.
The next volunteer session will take place on Saturday 19 September, from 10.30am until 3pm. People can drop in during the day and no previous experience is needed.
Anyone able to help is asked to bring sturdy footwear and, where possible, suitable tools such as a Dutch hoe, hard brush or spade.
