A welcoming space where Futures2gether’s community café brings people together

Futures2gether Cafe

Futures2gether’s community café is more than just a place for a cuppa – it’s a warm and inclusive space where clients showcase their skills, build confidence, and connect with the wider community.

A café with heart

Every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm, the Church at the Crossing, near Stone Railway Station, is transformed into a bustling café run by Futures2gether. Kelly and Alison, who set up the initiative six years ago, lead a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and clients, all working together to create a welcoming environment for visitors.

Open to everyone, the café is a donation-led enterprise, with a dish on each table for customers to contribute as they wish. Table service is at the heart of the experience, with clients taking orders on iPads, preparing refreshments, and serving a selection of cakes, tea, and coffee.

Beyond the café, Futures2gether provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, supporting them to develop life and work skills through a range of activities and placements in the local area.

More than just tea and cake

The café isn’t just about serving drinks and delicious homemade treats. Clients are involved in every aspect, from baking and shopping to setting themes. Recently, a Valentine’s-themed café saw “love in the air” as clients decorated the space and created a special experience for visitors.

Outside of café hours, Futures2gether clients take part in a variety of engaging activities. They’ve

  • Performed at local care homes like Shoemaker Place, putting on musical and acting showcases
  • Started a community garden project, helping to brighten up shared spaces
  • Joined a ukulele group, embracing music as another way to connect

Their passion for hospitality and community engagement is clear, and they are always looking for new ways to get involved in fulfilling and rewarding projects.

A place to belong

For those who attend, the café is more than just a place to work. It is a place to socialise, grow, and build confidence.

Charlotte, one of the clients, shared

“It means everything to me, it’s close to home. It feels like being at home, and I have loads of friends. The staff are really nice and supportive. I like taking the orders and meeting the people who come in.”

Chad, another client, added

“It’s good, often busy. I like having friends and family here – and meeting new people. I’ve been coming for about five years. We do marquetry, play games like bingo… Come down, have a look and see what you think.”

The café is also supported by volunteers, local students, and fundraisers, helping to create a strong sense of community.

A visit to remember

On a recent visit, A Little Bit of Stone experienced firsthand the positive impact of the café

“It was fantastic to see the work that Futures2gether are doing within our community. On our visit, there were so many things going on, and the café felt warm and welcoming. I can definitely recommend the lemon drizzle cake!”

Whether you’re looking for a friendly place to grab a coffee or want to see the impact of community-led projects in action, pop into the café on a Wednesday morning. You’ll be greeted with a smile, great company, and maybe even a slice of homemade cake.
