Stone Revellers have announced open auditions for their upcoming production of A Bunch of Amateurs, a fast-paced comedy packed with witty one-liners and heartwarming moments – to be performed at Crown Wharf Theatre this summer.
This hilarious and touching play, originally a film starring Burt Reynolds, is a love letter to amateur dramatics and promises to be a delight for both performers and audiences alike.
About the Show
Fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steel, desperate to revive his career, arrives in England to play King Lear. However, instead of treading the boards in Stratford-upon-Avon alongside the likes of Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, he finds himself in a sleepy Suffolk village. His co-stars? An enthusiastic but inexperienced amateur dramatics group fighting to save their beloved theatre from developers. Jefferson’s ego and vanity face a true test as he collides with this passionate band of thespians, ultimately leading him on a journey of self-discovery—and his inner Lear!
Written by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, A Bunch of Amateurs is brimming with sharp humour and theatrical charm. The script, crafted by the brilliant minds behind Spitting Image and Murder Most Horrid, is full of clever comedic riffs and laugh-out-loud moments.
The play has received a lot of critical acclaim:
“The Hislop/Newman partnership is responsible for scripts for iconic shows, including Spitting Image and Dawn French’s Murder Most Horrid, and these pedigree chums of the comedy world show their class in brilliant comic riffs with a joke in every line topped only by the next one.” – ***** What’s On Stage
“…a delightfully funny take on professional meets amateur theatre. The acerbic wit of Hislop and Newman metamorphoses into some hugely funny one-liners verging on farce in the best possible way.” – The Stage
