Ian Cooper has resigned as leader of Staffordshire County Council, a few days after he was removed from Reform UK membership. He now sits as an independent councillor for Perrycrofts in Tamworth.
The decision comes after campaign group Hope Not Hate said Cllr Cooper had posted dozens of racist and bigoted remarks across social media platforms, including comments aimed at Black and Asian public figures. Reform UK later revoked his membership following its investigation into undeclared social media accounts.
Acting leader in place until the new year
With the leadership now vacant, deputy leader Martin Murray has stepped into an acting role. A permanent successor is expected to be appointed at a full council meeting in the new year. Thursday’s meeting will go ahead, although no leadership decision is scheduled to be taken.
Cllr Murray, who represents Cannock Town, acknowledged the backdrop to the change.
He said,
“I recognise that these are challenging circumstances and the strength of feeling surrounding recent events.
Let me assure you that my commitment to deliver plans for a better Staffordshire remains absolute, and to represent all residents fairly and with respect.
My first and foremost priority is to ensure that Staffordshire County Council services continue without hindrance and to showcase Staffordshire as a fantastic county to live, visit and invest.”
As the council enters the final weeks of the year, its senior team will continue to oversee services while the process to select a new leader gets under way.
