Culvert being cleared to reduce flood risk

Environment Agency

The Environment Agency is removing silt from a major culvert and a canal siphon in the Star Lock area of Stone to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

The silt is being removed using a large suction unit and will restore the ability of the culverts to carry high flows on the Scotch Brook. The Environment Agency is also removing silt, vegetation and urban debris from open sections of the channel, downstream of the canal siphon and adjacent to the Star pub, using the suction unit and an excavator.

At the end of the works it’s expected around 300 tonnes of silt will have been removed, which will reduce flood risk to around 120 properties in Stone. The works which are being carried out by one of the Environment Agency’s specialist contractors started on 26th August, with completion planned for the end of October.
