A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The cyclist, a man in his forties, was trapped from the waist-down beneath the van. Initially it was thought he had suffered serious leg injuries. He was given pain relief and, with the help of the fire service, the vehicle was lifted in order for him to be released.

“He was assessed by the doctor on scene and was found not to have any major leg injuries. A pelvic splint and neck collar were applied and he was immobilised before being taken, accompanied by the doctor, to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

The police are also appealing for witnesses to the incident – the incident number is 545, 26th January. Call 101 with any information.

Saxifrage Drive was closed for almost two hours as the emergency services dealt with the situation.
