A team of divers cleared a culvert under the A34 at Meaford during the latest incident at the flooding hotspot, it has been revealed.

Staffordshire County Council called in the expert underwater team to help survey and clear a two-metre wide culvert running under Meaford Road near the A34. It was this blockage that is thought to have caused the flooding at the site over the last few weeks.

Mike Maryon, Staffordshire County Council’s Highways Chief, said the council was now looking for a long-term solution.

He said: “We now plan to work with local landowners to find a long-term solution to help reduce the risk of water overflowing on to the highway by lowering the water levels downstream of the culvert and putting in measures to make sure it doesn’t block again.”

The council’s engineers also built an emergency “dam” to stop a further one million gallons of water spilling on to the A34 after flooding closed both lanes of the southbound carriageway at the end of 2012.

While the essential work held back rainwater and allowed the road to re-open fully, divers were called in as part of a range of initiatives to ensure the network was in tip-top condition.
