With no end to the cold snap in sight, and more snow forecast, motorists in Stone have been urged to take extra care on the roads.
Both Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Staffordshire County Council issued warnings today. The fire service revealed it had attended nine road traffic collisions in the county over the weekend after the snow fell.
Head of risk reduction Ian Sloss said: “During these icy conditions it’s really important for drivers to take their time and take extra care. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and if conditions are treacherous, is your journey really that vital?”
County council highways chief Mike Maryon said gritting crews would be out during the icy weather but also called for drivers to be extra vigilant. He said: “The teams are doing a sterling job to ensure the county’s roads are as safe as possible but in severe weather like this it is more vital than ever to drive sensibly and safely.
“Avoid driving if at all possible and only make trips that are absolutely essential when the ice and frost hit the county. Wrap up in warm clothes and always let people know where you are going and what time you expect to be back.”
He encouraged motorists to take a flask with a hot drink in when they are out and about and a shovel so they can dig around their car if it gets snowed in. They are also being advised to keep their mobile phones fully charged just in case they need to call for help.
