Duncan Goodhew to visit swimming club

Swimming legend Duncan Goodhew will be paying a visit to Stone’s swimming club in the spring.

Stone & District Swimming Club was founded in the early 1970s at Alleyne’s Sports Centre and has a great tradition of teaching Stone’s youngsters to swim in a safe and happy environment.

Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew – who’s now the president of the Swimathon charity – will be dropping in to see the great work that’s being done by the club, which is run entirely by volunteers.

The club is now on to its second generation of members, with some youngsters’ parents being members of the club back in the 1970s and 1980s!

Richard West from the club said: “We’re a popular club with a very good reputation and we retain our members for many years. Several of our current swimmers’ parents were members when they were younger, though we haven’t quite reached three generations of the same family!

“There is a particularly thriving teenage section and many of the older teenagers support our younger swimmers under the direction of our teachers.

“Having said that, we’re always looking for new recruits at all levels of ability, as well as volunteers who would like to help on the poolside or behind the scenes. We’re also keen to increase the number of adult members.”

The club offers two sessions every week for young swimmers to learn a wide range of water skills:

• Mondays – 6.30pm to 7.15pm for beginners and improvers; 7.15pm to 8pm for more advanced swimmers; 8pm to 9pm – adult-only class where staff are on hand to offer advice, if needed, about stroke development and fitness using the ASA Swimfit scheme
• Saturdays – 8.30am to 9.20am for beginners and improvers; 9.20am to 10.15am for more advanced swimmers.
