A former landlord of The Star pub has died aged 86.

Vernon Gerrard ran the canal-side pub in the 1970s and was famous for wearing a Joule’s waistcoat every Christmas Day that had been specially made for him! Family friend Adele Leigh came across the waistcoat (pictured below) and lots of other Joule’s memorabilia while sorting through Mr Gerrard’s belongings.

Adele said: “The waistcoat was made by Sheila Hawley in the 1970s and it’s got The Star Inn and Vernon’s interests at the time. He used to wear it every Christmas Day. Vernon was the landlord at The Star for about 12 years and he always had a tale to tell of Stone and its people. The Joule’s memorabilia has yet to be sorted and we don’t know what will happen to it yet. But it certainly won’t be thrown away.”

Mr Gerrard’s funeral is at Christ Church on Tuesday 23rd October at 2pm.
