Volunteer Leader
A Leader helps run fun activities for children or young people as part of a small team.
You are never expected to do this on your own, and you don’t need special skills or experience to start.
This role is about encouraging young people, helping activities run smoothly, and being a positive adult presence.
What you’ll actually do
• Have fun!
• Help run a weekly session with other volunteers
• Join in with games, crafts, challenges, and activities
• Support young people to take part and feel included
• Help keep everyone safe and looked after
• Work as part of a friendly team where tasks are shared
You’ll always have support from more experienced volunteers, and you can start by helping out before taking on more responsibility.
What you don’t need
• You don’t need to be an expert
• You don’t need to plan everything
• You don’t need to lead games or speak in front of large groups straight away
• You don’t need previous Scouting experience
• You don’t need outdoor or camping skills to begin
You will never be left alone or asked to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
Skills that really help
• Being kind, patient, and encouraging
• Willingness to help and have a go
• Being reliable and turning up when you say you will
• Being happy to learn as you go
That’s it — everything else can be learned with time and support.
Training and support
• Full training is provided, step by step
• You’ll have a named person to support you
• You can take things at your own pace
• Other volunteers will guide and help you
No one expects you to know everything on day one.
Why people enjoy this role
• It’s fun and rewarding
• You see young people grow in confidence
• You’re part of a supportive team
• You make a real difference, even just by helping
If you’ve ever thought “I’d like to help, but I’m not sure I’d be good at it” — this role is designed for you.
