Joule’s original pale ale will be available in Stone again soon for the first time in 36 years as trials based on the original recipe get under way this week.
The licence-holding brewery, now based in Market Drayton, is hoping to have the finished product ready for tastings in the next month. Joule’s pale ale will be available at the brewery’s 18 Staffordshire pubs. There is no Joule’s pub in Stone but managing director Steve Nuttall said today that the ale will be available in the town, initially at The Swan on Stafford Street, where landlord Geoff Blundell already serves some Joule’s ales from original recipes.

Steve and wife Chrissie have built a brewery behind The Red Lion in Great Hales Street, Market Drayton, where the historic ale will be brought back to life. Joules bought The Royal Oak in Eccleshall earlier this month. Other pubs include The Glebe in Stoke, The Rose & Crown in Biddulph Moor, The Cock Inn in Leek, The Fox & Hounds and Lord Hill in Market Drayton and The Bank House Inn in Hixon. All the pubs are currently being refurbished. They will all boast the iconic red cross logo.

Joule’s was established in Stone in 1780 and is an iconic name and brand for the town. It was taken over by Bass Charrington in 1970 and stopped brewing in Stone four years later. There’s some great information and pictures on Joule’s here.
Steve said there were no specific sites in Stone that Joule’s is considering, but that if any came up they would be interested.
