Deadline approaches (17th October) for Stone residents who want to shape climate change plans in Stafford Borough.
As part of the Stafford Borough Council’s ‘Climate Change and Green Recovery Strategy,’ the local authority agreed to set up a panel with volunteers from the local communities to work with them.
Across the borough, more than a dozen residents have put their names forward to join the panel with the closing date for applications now only a few days away. The council is looking for members of the public who have a “passion” for the environment to help develop and promote initiatives that will reduce carbon emissions in their area.
Councillor Jonathan Price, Cabinet Member for Environment, said the panel was another key element in their strategy – following the appointment of a dedicated full-time Climate Change Officer earlier this year.
The panel will work alongside the local authority to:
- develop a climate change pledge and information packs for communities and businesses
- support community engagement activities and events
- work with others to develop initiatives that will reduce carbon emissions in their area and promote community action
- promote Sustainable Staffordshire
Councillor Price said they had made tackling climate change a top priority and he was proud of the progress already made.
“We are looking for people who have a genuine interest in climate change and would like to work with us. So, if you are someone who has a passion for protecting the environment, promoting sustainable lifestyles, and is happy to represent the views of your community then we would love to hear from you.”
Councillor Price added: “Tackling climate change is all our responsibility – residents, organisations, and
businesses. And, although we are a small cog in the global wheel, this is now an opportunity for people in our community to go that extra mile and help shape the way we go about doing our bit.”
As well as the appointment of a dedicated officer, the authority has partnered with Keele University, the Centre for Alternative Technology and other Staffordshire councils to look at what is required to achieve zero carbon targets.
