Sir Gavin Williamson recently visited Dunoon Ceramics in Stone, Staffordshire, to learn about the manufacturing of high-quality mugs and the rich history behind this century-old family-run company.
During his tour, Sir Gavin met with Production Manager Harriet Smith and Directors Peter and Alan Smith. He gained firsthand insight into the mug-making process and expressed fascination with the factory’s continued use of traditional methods, such as the slip hand-casting technique that ensures each mug is fine and lightweight.
Dunoon Ceramics, with over 100 years in the pottery industry, has significantly expanded its global reach. The company now exports to over 60 countries across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, all while preserving the traditions and methods on which it was founded.
Sir Gavin praised the company’s dedication to craftsmanship and international trade. He said:

“Dunoon Ceramics were very happy to welcome Sir Gavin to our factory in Stone, where he was able to witness the dedication of the many staff and skills on show on what goes into the making of a Dunoon Mug.
The company raised the importance of improving ties on trade with other countries, in particular Europe where the company has a very strong market. Since Brexit, costs and barriers to trade have increased which has been most unhelpful.
The rising costs of energy were discussed which are proving an ongoing challenge. Sir Gavin was able to see a newly purchased more efficient kiln, which should reduce firing emissions by 30% and will help our progression towards Net Zero.”
