Over 60 at special Save Our School meeting

St Dominic's could close in the summer

More than 60 campaigners attended a meeting at St Dominic’s Priory School on Saturday morning to work on the battle plan to keep the school in Station Road open.

Different groups worked to identify how pupil numbers can be increased, additional revenue raised and how the school can be run as efficiently as possible.

A proposal to keep the school open will be presented to the trustees at a meeting next week (w/b 31st January).

In an update on the Parents Action Group website, the school’s headteacher and her team were praised for their professionalism during a turbulent week.

It said: “This is clearly a difficult time for them and on behalf of all parents we would like to offer our deepest thanks for their professionalism over this last week. Not for a second have they allowed the current uncertainty to affect the educational and moral development of our children.

“They should know that mountains are being moved by us all to keep the school open and to allow them to continue to work their undoubted magic on our children! As we already knew, they are an absolute credit to their school and profession.”

I attended St Dominic’s from 1968 to 1975, when Sister Mary Mark was the Head, Sister Mary Cecilia taught us science, and Sister Mary Barbara (Bardie) was an inspiration in English (especially when she played Romeo & Juliet’s balcony scene, taking both roles, for our edification). It was a wonderful school where, as a half-Jewish girl reared by atheist parents, I felt loved and cherished.
