In an inspiring move, Stone resident Phil Baggley turns his time off work into a mission to clean up our community.
While many of us might see a period away from work as a chance to relax. Phil Baggley has embarked on a commendable journey that speaks volumes about his love for our town. Over the past three weeks, Phil has taken it upon himself to address an issue that affects us all: the litter marring the natural beauty of our local areas, especially around Scotch Brook near Morrisons and other known problem spots.
The Challenge at Hand
Despite Stone’s scenic beauty and charm, certain areas have been plagued by an ongoing litter problem. From the casual discarding of wrappers to the more deliberate dumping of larger waste, these acts of carelessness not only detract from the visual appeal of our environment but also pose significant harm to wildlife and the ecosystem. Driven by a deep sense of responsibility towards his hometown, Phil decided to take action.
Phil’s Litter-Picking Expedition
Equipped with nothing more than a pair of gloves, a bag, and an unwavering determination, Phil has made significant strides in cleaning up these areas. His efforts have not only led to the removal of heaps of rubbish but have also inspired others.
The Soul-Destroying Cycle
However, Phil’s mission has not been without its challenges. Despite his considerable efforts, the recurring nature of littering has been disheartening. “It’s somewhat soul-destroying to see areas you’ve just cleaned filling up with litter again,” Phil shared. This cycle highlights a deeper issue within our society’s relationship with the environment and underscores the need for a collective shift in mindset and behaviour.
A Call to Action
Phil’s story is not just a testament to his individual dedication but a call to arms for ALL residents of Stone. It reminds us that our town’s beauty and health are in our hands, and it’s up to us to take pride in and care for our surroundings.
Recognising the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors and the sense of accomplishment from contributing positively to the community, Phil proposes the establishment of a Mental Health Awareness Local Litter Pick. This initiative invites those who are out of work, feeling isolated, or simply in need of companionship to join others for a couple of hours of litter picking around the town. This will address both environmental concerns and open avenues for social connection and support.
