The relocation of Stone police station into the town council building in Station Road has taken a step closer.
Staffordshire Police have submitted planning applications to Stafford Borough Council to make the necessary alterations at the town council building.
The planned move by the police was revealed in 2011 as part of wider police plans to relocate a number of stations in the county. A public meeting was held at Walton Community Centre in January 2012, as well as an open letter to people in the town from then Stafford Borough Local Policing Commander, Chief Inspector Paul Trevor. More on that HERE.
Insp Giles Parsons, of Stafford Borough Local Policing Team, said: “As previously publicised we have been looking for alternative accommodation in Stone for some time. At this time we are awaiting planning permission for alterations to the Stone Town Council building in Station Street and once the outcome is known we will update the community on our plans to move.
“The same staff and officers will remain accessible to the public in Stone town centre and by working in the same building as council colleagues we will further improve the service to the community.”
Staffordshire Police said back in 2012 that only 20% of the current police station in Radford Street is actually used, and that at least £100,000 will need to be spent on repairs. There have been no custody facilities at the police station for many years – anyone detained in Stone is taken to one of the police’s custody sites in either Etruria or Burton.
