We’re pretty spoiled in Stone when it comes to live music. From regular live bands at Granvilles, The Swan and many other pubs, to thriving open mic nights, a jazz club and monthly Young Musicians’ Showcase, things are pretty good here if you like your live music.
There’s now a new event to add to the mix that’s really worth a look (and a listen. Definitely a listen). The first Wednesday of each month sees a merry band of musicians holding a folk session at the Royal Exchange in Radford Street, starting at 8pm. The first session took place on Wednesday 4th February and was a barnstorming success.
Organised and led by Jason Gallop and Charlotte Seabrook, who have just moved to Stone, the session allows anyone to take along an instrument and get involved.
On the night there were penny whistles, violins, squeeze boxes, a double bass, flute, percussive instruments and more. At the next session, on Wednesday 4th March, who knows what instruments people will bring along! Me, I banged the table, tapped my feet – which is perfectly acceptable as you don’t have to take an instrument along to take part – and thoroughly enjoyed the music that was created.
Poet Jo Bell, the UK Canal Laureate who’s lived in Stone for the last couple of years, also read three of her poems at the inaugural session (including a corker about the sex life of ducks!), an added and welcome bonus to what was already a brilliant event.
All in all, a brilliant new addition to Stone’s music scene. If you love live music, head for The Exchange on 4th March. And if you play an instrument, bring it along – you won’t regret it!
