‘Save Our School’ campaign hits Facebook

The campaign to keep St Dominic’s Priory School open has moved on to Facebook, with a special ‘Save Our School’ group boasting (at the time of writing) over 550 members.

The independent school in Station Road has to find new backers after its founders unexpectedly withdrew their funding last week. The English Dominican Congregation, which has run the school since it was founded in 1934, blamed falling pupil numbers for its decision.

An online petition has been set up, and action group members are also planning a fundraising site, where supporters can donate money to keep the school open.

The Facebook group is packed with current and former pupils, many of who have moved to other parts of the country.

One former pupil, who now lives in Devon, wrote: “I spent 5 years at St Dom’s from 1997 to 2002. It would be a real shame to see the school close and for future girls to be denied the chance to experience the caring nature of a school that recognises and nurtures not only academic achievement, but all apsects of their pupils’ lives.”

The English Dominican Congregation, which has run the school since it was founded in 1934, blamed falling pupil numbers for its decision to withdraw funding. It said: “The trustees have decided to withdraw from involvement with St Dominic’s at the end of the current academic year. Sadly, this means that the school may close at the end of the summer term. However, no decision has yet been made and will not be made until the staff have been consulted.”
