Six-year-old Matilda to climb Pen-y-Ghent for AEDdonate

Matilda OIn a feat of determination and youthful spirit, 6-year-old Matilda O’Connor is taking on a grand challenge to help save lives. Matilda, along with her family, will climb Pen-y-Ghent, one of the renowned Yorkshire Three Peaks, to raise money for Stone charity AEDdonate.

Matilda’s aim is to contribute towards providing communities with defibrillators, devices that can save someone’s life in the event of a cardiac arrest.

Pen-y-Ghent, with its summit standing at an elevation of 694 meters, will be the backdrop for Matilda’s 6-mile fundraising walk. This climb is no easy feat for anyone, let alone a 6-year-old. However, Matilda’s parents, Martin and Sophie, have shared that their daughter is ready for her first mountain challenge.

The family’s connection to the mountains is not new. Last year, Martin walked many mountains, including completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. The adventures inspired Matilda’s New Year’s resolution to walk up a mountain for charity. After numerous family walks in the Peak District, including some big hills with their dog Steve, Matilda feels ready to conquer Pen-y-Ghent.

The choice of charity holds a personal connection for the O’Connors. AEDdonate works to equip communities with defibrillators, which saved the life of Matilda’s Grandpa when he had a cardiac arrest in a gym in 2018. After seeing defibrillators in phone boxes and on walls, Matilda understood their importance and decided to support AEDdonate.

Every year in the United Kingdom, sudden cardiac arrest claims around 100,000 lives. Survival rates outside of a hospital setting are only 5% – 10%. Having immediate access to Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and a defibrillator can significantly increase the chance of survival. This is where AEDdonate steps in, helping to make a difference in communities across the country.
