Special church service to mark matrix return

The seal from Stone Priory

A commemorative service is being held at St Michael’s Church to celebrate the return of the 12th century seal matrix of Stone Priory that was found in a Surrey field in 2011.

The service takes place on Wednesday 24th July (St Wulfad’s Day) at St Michael and St Wulfad’s Church at 7.30pm. During the service the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Ian Dudson, will unveil the newly restored matrix in the specially-made case in which it will be permanently displayed at the church.

The service is ecumenical, with representatives from all the churches in Stone taking part and will also be attended by the Mayor of Stafford and Consort and the Town Mayor of Stone, Jill Piggott, and consort.

The service is open to everyone.

The money was raised in a major fundraising effort over the last couple of years by Stone Historical Society to return the seal to its home.
