Stone from above in the 1920s

There are some great aerial photographs of Stone from the 1920s on the Britain From Above website.

The site – at www.britainfromabove.org.uk – is a four-year project aimed at conserving 95,000 of the oldest and most valuable photographs in the Aerofilms collection dating from 1919 to 1953. The collection of photographs was created by Aerofilms Ltd, a pioneering air survey company set up in 1919 by First World War veterans Francis Lewis Wills and Claude Grahame-White.

People are being encouraged to look at the photos from their area and leave their memories and more. The site says: “The website launched with the first 10,000 images and as we currently have little information about the details in the images, the website provides the opportunity to share and record your memories and knowledge about the places shown in the collection.”

Let us know if you find anything of interest on there – it’s a real treasure trove and well worth a look! Email news@alittlebitofstone.com

Huge thanks to Nick Gumbley for letting us know about the Britain From Above website.

    On the top photograph
Crown Street is not a through road.
By the bottom left hand corner can be seen the Gas Works (coal was brought to the works by canal) and the gasometers (one of which had an advert for Joules Brewery painted on the top).
Just above EPWO26981 can be seen the Fustian (a type of velvet) Factory which housed Prisoners Of War during World War 1 and later became part of the Glass Factory.
Just beyond is the Cattle Market.
In the High Street can been the Joules Brewery Fermenting Tower.

The Lower photograph shows Joules Brewery and St. Dominic’s Church, Christ Church and St. Josephs Hall.
