Stone midwife Gem Sharman wins regional private midwife award

Stone midwife Gem Sharman has been named Private Midwife of the Year for Central England in the Prestige Awards.

Gem runs Day One Midwife, an independent home visiting service supporting families with newborn care, infant feeding and tongue tie assessment and treatment.

The award followed a nomination from one of the families she had supported.

Gem Sharman said

“I was nominated by one of the families I’d supported. I had no idea, and later found out by email that I’d been shortlisted.

“After another month or so of waiting, I received a phone call on International Day of the Midwife (which felt quite apt!) to tell me I’d won Private Midwife of the Year for Central England.

“I was so touched that a family thought enough of my service to nominate me. To then be selected as the winner is something I’m really proud of, and still a little in shock!”

Gem said the award organisers’ forthcoming publication highlighted her joined up approach, bringing assessment, treatment and feeding support together rather than treating them as separate elements.

She said it also noted her NHS midwifery experience and tongue tie practitioner qualification, as well as her work providing personalised care through dedicated home visits.

Gem added

“I love what I do, and being independent means I’m not watching the clock. I can take the time families need, answer their questions, and give them meaningful support.”

She said one recent Google review had also made her smile after describing her as “the Mary Poppins of tongues”.
