A Stone school and allotment project came up smelling of roses at this year’s Stafford Borough Council Green Awards.

St Dominic’s Priory School won the youth and education award for their eco garden, while the committee behind Tilling Drive Allotments in Walton were commended in the community category for their allotments’ new community area.

Tilling Drive Allotments

Jill Piggott from the allotments committee said: “In 2012 Stafford Borough Council gave the allotments a grant to enable us to purchase a compost toilet, thanks to the late Cllr Mike Carey who helped us to achieve this. Last year we decided it would be a great idea to have a community area on site so we could hold community events for members and their families and friends. In the area we have picnic tables and an apple tree and a plaque in memory of Mike.

“So far Trinity Skills have held two pop-up cafés there and we also held a community ‘Party on the Plot’ this summer. These have been a great success and we hope to hold more events in the coming years. We have all worked hard over the past five years to keep the allotments safe for future generations, so to get the award is very pleasing indeed.”
