Stone residents who park on the street are being asked whether they would be interested in a pavement channel allowing an electric vehicle to be charged from home.
Staffordshire County Council is exploring the potential introduction of EV gullies for households without a driveway or dedicated parking space.
Residents can share their views through an online survey, which takes up to ten minutes to complete and closes on Sunday 9 August.
How EV gullies would work
An EV gully is a small channel installed in the pavement between a property and the road.
It would allow a charging cable to run from a home charging point to a vehicle parked on the street, without leaving the cable trailing across the pavement and creating a trip hazard.
The council says home charging could significantly reduce costs for electric vehicle owners who currently rely on public charging points.
Funding and installation costs
Some of the installation cost could be supported through Staffordshire County Council’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund.
The survey asks residents how they currently travel, whether they may consider an electric vehicle and how much they would be willing or able to contribute towards an installation.
Responses will be used to help the council understand demand and consider how any future Staffordshire scheme could operate.
Completing the survey does not guarantee that an EV gully will be installed at a property, or that a wider scheme will go ahead.
Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Connectivity, Andrew Mynors, said
“While there is growing electric vehicle ownership nationally, we understand that many residents do not have off street parking. The solution being proposed could deliver affordable charging options, utilising funding already secured by the county council and at no extra cost to us.
“We have reviewed how we can help provide charging infrastructure in a way that benefits the people who need it most whilst keeping disruption to communities at a minimum during installation.”
