Stone Rotary’s international connections help a local family

When you meet Christopher Bond for the first time he seems just like a normal ten year old boy.

What isn’t obvious is that in October 2013 he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which was removed during a long operation at Alder Hay Children’s Hospital.

He seemed to be making a full recovery until a follow up scan in March 2014 revealed that the tumour was growing again.

The best form of treatment is proton beam therapy, normal radiotherapy is too scattergun for a tumour in such a sensitive place.  Proton beam therapy is not available in the UK, but is available in the USA and the National Health Service has agreed to fund the treatment in Oklahoma City.

The Rotary Club of Stone & District became aware of the situation when one of the Club’s members reported that Christopher’s father was raising funds through a local appeal to help the parents to be with him all the time and to contribute towards research into childhood cancers.

The Club has donated to the appeal and has also arranged for Northwest Oklahoma City Rotary Club to provide a local point of contact for the family whilst they are in the USA. It is a great comfort to the family.

Tim Joyce, Secretary of Stone Rotary Club, remarked that Rotary is all about helping to ‘put something back’ into the community, and being able to help the Bond family in this way was just one way of achieving that.

He was also grateful to the members of the Northwest Oklahoma City Rotary Club who had so freely agreed to help make the family’s stay in Oklahoma City more tolerable.
