Teenagers urged to vote for best book

Teenagers in Stone have been urged to vote for their favourite book after a shortlist of six was revealed.

Since September last year, young people in Stone and across Staffordshire aged between 11 and 14 have been nominating their favourite book of the year as part of Staffordshire Library Service’s Young Teen Fiction (YTF) Award.

Designed to encourage young people to enjoy books and share their enthusiasm with their peers, the award is now in its seventh year.

This year, there were over 1,000 nominations for books that Staffordshire’s teens felt worthy of the 2011 award.  The six with with the most votes are:

  • My Name Is Mina by David Almond
  • I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have To Kill You by Ally Carter
  • I Was Jane Austin’sBest Friend by Cora Harrison
  • Skulduggery Pleasant: Mortal Coil by Derek Landy
  • Mortlock by Jon Mayhew
  • Withering Tights by Louise Renniso

Book-loving teenagers now have until 8pm on Tuesday 5th July to vote online for their pick of the shortlist. The winner will be announced at a celebration day at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Thursday 7th July.

Pat Corfield, county council cabinet member for culture, communities and customers, said: “Books have to compete with modern technologies for the time of our teenagers. It is so heartening to see that Staffordshire’s young people want to get involved in the Young Teen Fiction Award and that they feel passionately about what they like to read.”
