Staffordshire County Council has confirmed that a scheme to improve main roads in Stone town centre will begin on Monday 13 July.

The works are scheduled to be completed by 23 October and will cover roads including Stafford Street, Crown Street, Newcastle Street, Station Road, Granville Square, Christchurch Way and Radford Street.
The scheme will include repairs to kerbs, footways and drains, as well as the installation of tactile crossing points. Resurfacing is due to take place in the autumn.
Temporary traffic signals will be in place during the works and will be manned between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.
Portable illuminated signs have also appeared in the town warning that works start on 13 July and will run for 10 weeks, with drivers told to expect delays. The signs may add to some confusion locally, as the county council’s latest update says the wider scheme is scheduled to run until 23 October.
When resurfacing takes place from 7 September to 16 October, some nighttime closures will be needed between 7pm and 6am. Staffordshire County Council says the locations and timings of those closures will be publicised closer to the time.
The update will be welcomed by residents who have raised concerns about potholes around the Newcastle Street, Newcastle Road and Crown Street junction.
Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Highways, said
“These are busy roads around Stone so this scheme is important as it will bring huge improvements for motorists in a thriving town centre.
“Our project team carried out thorough design and preparation works earlier this year. This ensures that we have a high-quality scheme that it can be carried out as quickly as possible.
“Some of this scheme has been scheduled over the schools summer holiday to minimise disruption. We understand that with any traffic management however, particularly on such a busy route, there will inevitably be some delays for which we would like to apologise for in advance. We’re always grateful for people’s understanding wherever we’re carrying out improvements.”
