Thai Lanna in Stone closes after 18 years, as new restaurant prepares to take its place

After 18 years serving Thai cuisine on Stone High Street, Thai Lanna has now permanently closed.

The much-loved restaurant on the corner of Stone High Street has officially closed its doors, as the owners announced their retirement on their website.

“We are retiring and wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your custom and support over the last 18 years.

The Chef has moved to Thai Lanna – Chasewater which, under the management of our Son, Chakris will remain open for the foreseeable future.”

New future for 11 High Street

The building won’t be empty for long. A new Turkish and Mediterranean bar and grill is due to open at the same address in August 2025.

A banner now hangs outside the building announcing “Havin Bar and Grill”, signalling the change to come.

Speaking about the new restaurant, the former owners confirmed:

A restaurant with heart

Thai Lanna – Stone opened in May 2007, after the couple took over the former Chai Yo Thai restaurant. It became a firm favourite for locals, known not only for its food but for its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

On the Thai Lanna website, co-owner Kevin Denis wrote:

“The Thai Lanna Restaurants are the realisation of the aspirations of my wife Benjamart Denis. Benjamart (known as Ben for short) was born and grew up in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand; the capital of what used to be the Lanna civilisation.

Benjamart trained as a teacher, specialising in Agriculture and Domestic Science, so understands both the science and technology behind Thai food. Since then, Benjamart has gained considerable experience in the Thai food restaurant business, both in Thailand and UK.”

Over the years, Thai Lanna gained a loyal following in Stone, with many families returning time and again. The restaurant’s traditional Lanna-style décor and laid-back style made it a popular spot for both celebrations and casual evenings out.

The story continues

While Thai Lanna in Stone has now closed, the original Thai Lanna restaurant near Chasewater remains open and continues to be a family affair, with their son Chakris managing the site. The chef from the Stone restaurant has now joined the kitchen there.

For the Stone community, Thai Lanna leaves behind many memories, from date nights and anniversaries to office parties and family celebrations.

Really sad to see it close, it was our tradition to go for special occasions or the occasional date night. Will miss them but they deserve a restful retirement.
Already told my husband he will need to take me to chasewater from now on
