A great new event has been added to the Stone Festival line-up this year – Lymestone Brewery’s wife-carrying contest!

The event will take place on Festival carnival day, Saturday 14th June, at Westbridge Park – with the winning pair winning the ‘wife’s’ weight in beer. Pairs of two adults (18 and over) will race round an obstacle course to become the first Stone wife-carrying champions.

Brad from Lymestone Brewery posted on the brewery Facebook page: “To prove we’re not being sexist, the carrier and the wife can be of either sex and BOTH can be the same sex. Gender is not an issue! Nor does it have to be your matrimonial partner!”

There is a minimum ‘wife’ weight of 50kg. It costs £10 per team to enter, with every contestant getting a prize! The winning team gets the ‘wife’s’ weight in Lymestone beer. All proceeds from the event will go to the Stone mayor’s charities.

Wife carrying originated in Finland and a world championship has been held there since 1992. A North American contest got under way in 1999. In the UK, an annual British championship takes place near Dorking. It’s taking place this year on 16th March. Here’s a video of the 2012 event as a taster for what we can expect in Stone this summer!
