Repair work is being undertaken to the canal lock adjacent to the Star public house to replace replace damaged brickwork and re point the rest of the brickwork. The lock gates are also receiving treatment to improve the seal of the gates to improve the efficiency of the working of the lock.
The work is being done by employees of CRT (Canal and River Trust) along with volunteers who regularly look after the locks and tow path in Stone with CRT, and should be completed by the afternoon of Friday 20th January.
The lock was constructed in 1771 and is part of a series which raise the level of water in the canal by 39 feet in the Stone area. The photographs below show the inside of the lock drained of its normal water supply.
The footpath alongside the lock is still open and the volunteers are available to meet the public and answer any questions you may have.
