Fatality following Stone canal boat fire

Staffordshire’s Fire and Rescue’s control centre received a report of a fire on a canal barge at 1.53am on Thursday 22nd February 2018.

The barge was moored on the Trent and Mersey Canal near to the Star Inn, Stone.

Crews attended the fire from Stone and Longton fire stations. Four breathing apparatus were worn and they used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

A woman in her 50s was rescued by firefighters from within the barge and gave her CPR. Sadly despite their best efforts, she died at the scene. A dog also died as a result of the incident.

A joint fire investigation is taking place today, with colleagues from West Midlands Fire Service and Staffordshire Police.

The area of canal around the Star Inn is currently cordoned off so please avoid the area if you can.
