Match Report – Stone Old Alleynians Vs. Sandbach United

Hallmark Security League Div 1 (South)

Saturday 19thJanuary 2019

Sandbach Utd ended the Old Boys recent good run of 11 matches without defeat, in a competitive match at Wellbeing Park.

It didn’t appear that way at the start, when the Alleynians took a 5 min lead. They won a corner on the right and Jimmy Lee’s ball to the far post was met by Luke Askey, out jumping the visitor’s defence, to give them an early lead. Unfortunately the lead only lasted a minute, Ollie Davies’s trip on a Utd forward in the area was easily converted by Josh Lane for an equalizer. Both teams went hard to take the lead and Alleynians were indebted to Adam Alcock for a couple of excellent saves.

The second half was somewhat similar and it was Sandbach who went in front, after only 10 mins through Will Buckley. Stone tried hard to get an equalizer, but it was Sandbach who looked the most likely to score the next goal with their quick counter attacks from their excellent forward line. However the Alleynians were the next to find the net, through another corner on the left. The ball to the near post was headed on by Sam Wilson for sub Will Bailey, ghosting in at the far post to head home from a narrow angle.

The Old Alleynians then made a mistake by going for a winner, allowing effective counter attacks and they paid the price on 88 mins. A quick break down the left sent Harry Cain, I’ve heard that name somewhere, clear and he lobbed the ball over the advancing Alcock for the winner.

The old boys were too easily outfought on occasions and the more aggressive Sandbach players did not give them time to play their usual flowing football. This was probably summed up by the yellow cards, which the visitors also “won” 5-0
