Review: The Wedding Singer – Stone Revellers

Love, Laughter, Lyrics, and Lycra all combined for a brilliant adaptation of The Wedding Singer

Stone Revellers once again hit it out the park with another great production, this time with a musical comedy based on the 1998 film The Wedding Singer.

Like the film, the show is set in America in the mid-1980s and for a child of the 70’s it had all of the nostalgic nods that I remember so well. Yuppies on massive mobile phones, hair……lot’s of hair, neon clothing and the unmistakable sounds of 80’s music!

If you’ve seen the film, you’ll recognise each of the characters immediately. Robbie (Alec Voss) the loveable wedding singer, the flamboyant George (James Norman) and the sweet and lovely Julia (Beatrice Goodwin).  The entire cast did a magnificent job of bringing the film to the stage, all choreographed by Dance Captain Angela Whitney.

You won’t find the original 80’s songs from the film in the show, you will, however, get new original songs that the audience loved.

I was so happy to see two of the original songs from the film make their way into the show, The sweet….but then disturbing song that Robbie writes about Linda and the final song that Robbie sings to Julia…..both of which Voss sang amazingly and while playing the guitar.

Both Voss and Goodwin were great lead choices with great stage presence and voices. I’d like to give a special mention to Kath Walton who played Julia’s best friend, Holly. Her characterisation of Holly was incredibly true to the film, and she had a real presence on stage when she sang.

Other highlights were Glenn (Matt Dewey) looking and sound as smarmy as you remember 1980’s yuppies, and Grandma (Charl Andrews) who had impressive rapping skills!

Despite a few opening night technical issues the cast and band put on a brilliant show and richly deserved the wave of applause at the end.

The Wedding Singer runs until Saturday 6th April, with a matinee on the Saturday at 2:30 pm. Head on over to https://stonerevellers.org.uk/ to buy tickets, or pop into Home and Colour on Stone High Street.
