Trade boosting summer scheme available for restaurants to sign up

A Government-funded initiative to boost trade over August and protect jobs in the sector is now available for Staffordshire restaurant owners to sign up to.

Anyone eating or drinking in on Mondays to Wednesdays throughout August at restaurants participating in the Eat Out to Help Out scheme will be eligible for a 50% reduction on food, up to a maximum of £10 per person.

People won’t need vouchers as participating eateries will just remove the discount from their bill. Businesses will reclaim the discounted amount through an online service, supported by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The initiative was announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak last week.

Businesses can register for the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme if they:

  • Sell food that is intended for consumption on the premises when purchased
  • Provide their own dining area or share a dining area with another business for eat-in meals
  • Have registered as a food business with their district or borough council on or before July 7

A searchable restaurant finder tool will be available to the public before the scheme launches on August 3. Alcohol is excluded from the offer.

Staffordshire County Council’s economic growth leader Mark Winnington said: “The hospitality sector has been hit particularly hard by the Covid-19 crisis and in Staffordshire is a vital part of our local economy.

“We have some fantastic restaurants in the county that we want to see get back on their feet and thriving again. More people are heading out now to enjoy themselves safely and this is a welcome boost from the Government. We hope people will take advantage of this offer during August and support their local eateries.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said: “Restaurants and other eligible establishments are now able to support jobs by signing up to a place on the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme. HMRC’s quick and easy registration page will soon have you on your way to welcoming back your customers with discounted dining on every Monday to Wednesday throughout August, with a simple process to reclaim these discounts back from the Government each week.”
