National Winners – The Owl class (Y4) at Barlaston First School are celebrating their big win in the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund Competition.
This national challenge asked, “What can we do to make our roads more attractive to all types of user?”
With 142 entrants, and eight primary schools from all over the UK selected for the finals, the judges said they were “blown away” by the quality of Barlaston’s entry. They were the clear winners of the £5,000 prize.
The class’s research was helped with data from the Community Speedwatch Group. The children’s (drastic) solution for making vehicles stay below the speed limit was to “lock” all the phones in a vehicle for 48 hours if the car went too fast. They think that Pester Power from passengers might work because as Sam, aged 8, said: “Nothing else seems to work!”
Mrs Broome, Class Teacher commented:
“The children worked so hard and learned so much about how roads are used in different villages, town and cities. We all had great fun making the entry video and I must thank Mr Bentley and Gordon Taylor for their fabulous input. The children will remember this for such a long time.”
The school will now take some time to decide what to do with the cash prize. Mrs Clarey, Headteacher said:
“This is such an incredible boost for our school community. We have several ideas on how we can improve the children’s experience at school, and we’ll take their views into account too. Congratulations to all involved – well done Owl Class!”
