Stone’s new Town Mayor has been appointed for the forthcoming civic year.
Councillor Andrew Best, who has served as Stone’s Deputy Mayor for the past year, was appointed Mayor at Stone Town Council’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday 12 May.
Following his appointment, Councillor Best said
“This will be a big year for me. I know my children are very proud of me and I think my wife is.
“I’m looking forward to representing Stone and it’s a year I will remember. Thank you for nominating me.”
Councillor Best’s first engagements as Town Mayor will be this weekend, including Stafford Borough Council’s Mayor Making in the county town on Saturday.
His wife Rosalind Best will be his consort. During his civic year he has chosen to raise funds for Stone Scout and Guide Band, Stone Alzheimer’s Club and support group Man Time.
Councillor Best was first elected to Stone Town Council in 2019 and represents the Stonefield and Christchurch ward. He has lived in Stone all his life, has three children and his interests include table tennis.
Councillor Robert Townsend was appointed to serve as Deputy Mayor at Tuesday’s meeting. He was not present, but will be able to sign the Declaration of Acceptance of Office at a later date.
Stone’s annual Civic Sunday event will take place on Sunday 12 July. There will be a parade through the High Street at 10.30am, followed by a service at St Michael and St Wulfad’s Church at 10.45am.
Councillor Best succeeds Councillor Jason Metters, who has been Town Mayor for the past year. At Tuesday’s meeting, Councillor Metters presented his successor with the chain of office.
Councillor Jill Hood paid tribute to the former Mayor.
She said
“You have fulfilled every duty with absolute passion. You have been an incredible Town Mayor.”
