CCTV cameras are to be installed at St Michael’s Hall in Lichfield Street following a spate of vandalism.
Stone Town Council has agreed to pay £480 for cameras at the building, which marked its centenary last year.
Hall manager and St Michael’s Church recorder Dennis Abbott wrote to the town council asking for help.
He told The Sentinel: “The problems have been going on for a number of years and it’s usually around a dozen youngsters who are to blame. We get general anti-social behaviour like noise, litter and kids banging on the windows and the choir members have been intimidated in the past when they have been practising on Friday evenings. There’s been a few occasions when they have had things thrown at them as they’ve left, which isn’t very nice at all.
“The problems tend to get worse when the weather picks up, and we were very worried about the coming summer months and the problems we might face. We’ve had to replace the windows at the back of the church hall, which we had to pay for, so it’s very frustrating. We haven’t got a lot of money left after the bills have been paid, so we can’t afford to be repairing vandalism to the building constantly.”
Members of Stone Town Council unanimously supported the funding for CCTV cameras.
