Ambition gym takes on 24-hour charity run for mums and babies in need

A Stone gym is limbering up for a full 24 hours of running, all in aid of a vital local service that supports new mothers and their babies through some of life’s toughest challenges.

Starting at midnight on Friday, 27th June, the team at Ambition gym on Mount Road will be running continuously for a full day to raise funds for the Parent and Baby Unit at St George’s Hospital in Stafford. It is a cause close to the hearts of many who have experienced or witnessed the often-overlooked struggles around postnatal mental health.

Supporting mothers with specialist care

The Parent and Baby Unit at St George’s is a specialist eight-bed facility that provides inpatient care to women experiencing serious mental health difficulties during pregnancy or in the first year after birth. This includes conditions such as severe postnatal depression and postnatal psychosis, which can develop rapidly and require urgent treatment.

Crucially, the unit allows mothers and babies to stay together, helping to protect and nurture the early bond between them. Women from 32 weeks of pregnancy can also be admitted, with care designed to support not just the individual, but their whole family.

Why this matters

  • Up to 80 percent of new mothers experience the “baby blues” in the days following birth.
  • Around 1 in 7 women go on to develop postnatal depression.
  • Between 1 and 2 in every 1,000 mothers experience postnatal psychosis, a serious and urgent condition.

While many parents are able to recover with support from family, friends, and community services, others need more intensive care. That is where the Parent and Baby Unit plays such a vital role.

A fundraising push from Stone

Ambition gym has set a target of £750 for this event and, at the time of writing, they are already at £240. With help from the community, they are hoping to cross the finish line both on the treadmill and with their total.

Every donation, share, and show of support will make a difference. Whether you pop down to the gym to cheer them on or simply give what you can, your support could help mothers and babies across Staffordshire access the care they need.

The run begins at midnight on 27th June and will continue until midnight the following night.
