Gill’s appeal on items for Backpack Project

Cub Scout assistant leader Gill Knight has urged people in Stone to donate backpacks, stationery and other basic educational materials that will be sent to some of the poorest communities in the world.

Aston and Little Stoke cub group is collecting items for the Mary’s Meals charity, which sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities where hunger and poverty prevent children from gaining an education.

The charity’s Backpack Project appeals to schools, clubs, businesses, churches and individuals to fill backpacks with basic educational materials to send to children receiving Mary’s Meals. Most of the children who benefit from Mary’s Meals and the Backpack Project have suffered war, poverty, famine or natural disaster.

Gill said: “If anyone has any items, used or unused, that we can put into a backpack, I would love to hear from you. Items really don’t have to be new – used items are just as good. We could also do with some more backpacks too.

“The cubs will start to pack the backpacks next week and it’s been a great project as part of their Global Explorer badge. Western children have so much, but without these few basic items African children cannot attend school. Thanks for any support you can offer.”
