A mystery internet bidder paid over £1,000 for a range of historic items from Joule’s Brewery at an auction last week.
The collection of Joule’s memorabilia – ranging from beer mats and branded hand-pull beer pumps through to ledgers from before the brewery shut down in the 1970s – sold for £1,030. The 11 lots were auctioned at Cuttlestones’ specialist collectors sale in Wolverhampton on Friday 24th February.
Highlights included a wall clock and a tray both carrying the company branding which, despite being somewhat dishevelled, fetched £220. Other ‘star lots’ were a Joules twin beer pull and a ‘Register of transfer debenture stock record book’ covering the period 1922-1934, that each sold for £120.
Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton auction room manager Tom Waldron said: “This was a truly fascinating local collection with a rare provenance. Whoever the lucky purchaser is, they now have a unique and very interesting addition to their collection.”
The new owners of Joule’s, now based in Market Drayton, bid for the items but Cuttlestones could not name the winning bidder. Stone Town Council is currently working with the Heart of Staffordshire Camra branch to put that group’s collection of memorabilia on show in the town. Earlier this month, the old Joule’s clock made a welcome return to Stone High Street.
