Stafford Borough Council has announced that local communities looking to put on events to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day will not have to pay for road closures on Friday 8th May 2020.
Stafford Borough Council is waiving its normal fees to close roads to support local organisations and residents marking the important date.
But the council is appealing to people to apply to them as soon as possible to ensure they can have the road closures in place for street events or other activities on the Bank Holiday Friday (8 May) or the Saturday or Sunday of that weekend.
The early May Bank Holiday has been moved to the Friday to coincide with the actual date in the second world war when the allied forces announced the surrender of the German army in 1945.
Cabinet Member for Communities and Health, Councillor Jeremy Pert, said:
“We have heard of events being organised to mark such an important date in our history and we want to encourage communities to get together and commemorate Friday 8 May.
“Some activities may require roads to be closed so we are asking organisers to get in touch with us and, if there is no reason why we cannot make a road closure order, then we will do it for free.
“We can also offer advice about how to go about getting permission for closing a road – so it is one less thing to worry about to ensure the big day goes well.”

A road closure application needs to be made at least four weeks before the event takes place – and when someone gets in touch with the Borough Council, they will be sent guidance along with an application form.
