Watch out for opportunist thieves

Local police officers will be at Morrisons in Stone this week to remind people about the importance of removing valuables from vehicles.

The initiative comes as Staffordshire Police revealed that 60 vehicles were targeted by opportunist thieves in January across the Stafford Borough (which includes Stone), Cannock Chase and South Staffordshire areas after they were left unlocked or valuables were left on show.

In the same month, there were 21 burglaries after homes or garages were left unlocked.

Police say that 12 people were charged with car crime during the month, and nine people were charged with 11 burglary offences. However, Staffordshire Police is urging local people to use simple measures to help keep the county even safer:

  • Lock your vehicle, close all windows and secure it in a garage overnight, where possible
  • Remove all valuables, including mobile phones, Sat Nav systems and cradles, laptops, bags and tools
  • Clean-off any ‘Sat. Nav’ sticker marks visible on windscreens
  • Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys in it, even if just using the ATM or buying a newspaper
  • Keep car keys out of sight at home – away from windows, doors and letterboxes
  • Lock all windows and doors to your home and never leave valuable items or keys on display.
