A historic canal bridge in Stone that has been hit by vehicles numerous times over the last few years will be repaired this winter.
Barriers were installed to protect the damage a couple of years ago at the bridge on Washdale Lane in Meaford.
The Canal and River Trust will be carrying out the repair works to the bridge this winter to coincide with works to the lock and weir.
A spokesman said engineers are closely monitoring the condition of the bridge during monthly inspections and called on drivers to take extra care when crossing it.
He said: “While we’re monitoring the condition of the bridge, we also need members of the public to help us out by driving with care. The fact the barriers have been hit shows that some people are still driving over the bridge without giving the care and attention that they really should be. This bridge is an important part of the area’s heritage and each year it costs us thousands of pounds to carry out repairs like the ones we’re planning in the winter.
“So while we’re doing our bit in repairing the bridge back to its former glory, we also need others to show some responsibility and slow down so we can protect the bridge and prevent any incidents like this happening in the future.”
