Sad death of Scout leader and carpenter George

Stone carpenter and Scout leader George Shufflebotham has died while on a camping trip in Wales.

George, who was 66, was camping with 1st Stone Scouts near Abergele and died of natural causes on 9th August. George, as well as working from his workshop in Victor Street, was involved with 1st Stone Scouts for over 30 years.

He was married to wife Pat for more than 40 years and had two children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs Shufflebotham told the Staffordshire Newsletter: “He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and would help anybody. We never knew him to have a complaint and he always made time for people.”

George created the wooden seat at the base of the Joule’s clock on Stone High Street and was at the launch in February this year. The picture above shows him with then mayor June Price and Elsie Smith, the final employee to leave Joule’s brewery when it was closed in 1974.
