The stretch of Mount Road by the Trent and Mersey Canal in Stone will be closed to traffic for six weeks from Monday (10th November).
The road is being closed to allow the Canal and River Trust to carry out repairs to a collapsed culvert, and will be out of bounds to traffic until Sunday 21st December.
The closure means that traffic heading for Mount Road and the top end of town after coming off the A34 by the George and Dragon will have to take alternative routes.
Information on www.roadworks.org suggests that the footpath will remain unaffected and that the NCN 5 Stone to Stoke cycleway, which uses the road between the two canal bridges on Meaford Road, “will be maintained”.
A spokesman for the Canal and River Trust sent us this information today (10th November): “A culvert for the lock has collapsed at the base of a retaining slope that supports the road above. Road barriers were installed last month to divert the traffic away from the affected area while we completed the designs for a repair. The contractor has begun to mobilise this week and is expected to be on site for approximately 10 weeks. While we are on site we are also repairing the bridge parapet wall that was struck by a vehicle during icy conditions, and also opening up the inlet to the culvert, which should also improve water flow in the area.”
