Staffordshire Police is encouraging people in Stone and across the county to register their CCTV cameras and video doorbells on a new system designed to help officers find potential evidence following crimes and other incidents.
The Staffordshire Police CCTV Registry launched on Monday 10 August and allows residents and businesses to add details of cameras covering their property.
The registry creates a map showing police where registered cameras are located, meaning investigators can identify people who may have captured useful footage when an incident takes place nearby.
Registering a camera does not give Staffordshire Police remote access to it or allow officers to view a live feed.
Instead, if police believe a registered camera may have captured evidence, the owner can be contacted by email or text and given a link through which they can choose to upload relevant footage.
Staffordshire Police said
“Your CCTV or doorbell camera may capture key evidence for a case without your realising.”
The force says registration takes less than a minute.
