Stone residents invited to plant a tree for someone special

People in Stone are being invited to help Staffordshire Wildlife Trust plant trees across the county, with donations able to mark a special occasion or remember a loved one.

Tree Planting

The charity is promoting its Plant a Tree scheme, allowing supporters to make a donation towards tree planting while celebrating a birthday, wedding or another special occasion. Donations can also be made as a tribute to someone who has died.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust says trees can provide food, shelter and breeding spaces for wildlife, while also storing carbon, absorbing air pollution and helping to reduce the effects of flooding.

The Trust also stresses that tree planting needs to follow a “right tree, right place” approach. Some habitats, including species rich grassland and wet or marshy areas, may already be particularly valuable for wildlife and may not be suitable for new trees.

For anyone thinking of planting a tree themselves, the charity recommends native species suited to local conditions. Its list of species native to Staffordshire includes trees such as English oak, hawthorn, crab apple, hazel, rowan and silver birch.

The usual planting period is between mid November and late March, when tree roots are dormant.

People wanting to support the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust scheme can find out more through its Plant a Tree fundraising page.
