Stone Rugby Players Help Regain Midlands Title

Stone rugby starlets played a key role in their school team’s quest to regain a Midlands title they relinquished last season.

Stafford Preparatory School’s tag team at the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) under-11 regional championships in Warwickshire, their solid defending provided a springboard to success for .

Stone player Addison Perry (11), Samuel Edwards (10), fromAston-by-Stone, and Salt Heath’s Poppy Dixon (10)  travelled to Warwickshire with the Stafford Prep outfit in a bid to get their title hopes back on track. Four successive victories in the group stage of competition at Princethorpe College set up a showdown for the silverware against Derby’s Old Vicarage School.

“Our players worked tremendously hard in defence and denied many teams the opportunity to score tries.  They worked incredibly well as a team, communicating effectively and supporting the ball-carrier,” said sports coach Spencer Gunnell.

In the final the sides remained neck and neck at half time but SPS stepped up a gear and continued to defend stoutly, clinching the tie 11-6 to recapture the trophy they won in 2015.
