Work on towpath improvements on the Trent and Mersey Canal between Meaford and Barlaston are progressing well, although the stretch will be closed to walkers until November as planned.

Work on the notoriously muddy stretch got under way in February between Meaford Lock Bridge and the Plume of Feathers in Barlaston (bridges 98 to 103).
The Canal and River Trust has reminded walkers that although work is on schedule and improvements are being made, the towpath won’t be open until the end of November. The canal is navigable as usual for boaters – although they’ve been asked not to moor alongside this stretch of towpath.
You can see the latest progress report here – Towpath improvement report (June) – which includes some before and after photos of work completed so far. Thank to Cath Taylor for the photograph above.
The work is the final piece of the jigsaw to link a national cycle path between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent. It forms part of the Trent and Mersey Canal towpath improvement project, a partnership between Stafford Borough Council, the county and the Canal and River Trust.
